Veil Nebula

from $35.00

The Veil Nebula is the remnants of a star that exploded as a supernova approximately 10,000 years ago.  When it was first seen from Earth it would have been brighter than Venus and visible in the daytime sky.  The light we see today has been on its way for 2,400 years so we are seeing it as it was during the lifetime of Alexander the Great.  Looking deep into space really is like having a time machine.  For this shot, I took separate images at the wavelengths of ionized hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur over a period of several hours from a dark sky site in Saskatchewan, Canada.  I then combined them to produce the colours seen here.
