I captured this image of a grizzly bear and many others while on a two week sailing trip around the Great Bear rainforest on Canada's west coast. During the fall salmon run, the bears are eating as much as they can to bulk up before winter. In this shot the grizzly bear takes center stage as he gracefully descends towards a river abounding with salmon. With a powerful stride, his massive back paw leaves an indelible mark on the Earth, a testament to his strength and dominion. Caught in a moment of curiosity, the bear glances back over his shoulder, engaging the viewer with an enigmatic gaze. The image was of course captured with a long lens, ensuring that I could keep my distance. No wildlife photograph should ever be captured at the cost of disturbing the subject’s natural behaviour and none of my images ever are.
